Ending a lease or tenancy in Alabama
Alabama landlord guide to week-to-week, month-to-month and fixed-term tenancy endings under Ala. Code § 35-9A-441.
Week-to-week tenancy: at least seven days' written notice before the stated termination date.
Month-to-month tenancy: at least thirty days' written notice before the periodic rental date specified in the notice.
A fixed term must actually expire before a no-consent holdover path begins.
The signed lease may impose renewal or nonrenewal requirements that still matter.
Why this matters
Alabama ties month-to-month termination to the periodic rental date, not merely a date reached by adding thirty days. The workflow preserves that relationship.
Legal authority: Ala. Code § 35-9A-441
